NASHVILLE, Tenn., April 17, 2002 – DBI Distributing Inc. announced today that it has entered the beverage distribution industry with the purchase of assets of Crown Distributing Co., Inc. of Memphis. Crown serves Shelby County, distributing beverages for approximately 20 suppliers. Terms of the deal will not be disclosed.
The company has 70 employees and services approximately 1,400 accounts in the Memphis area. Bob Monroe will serve as its vice president and general manager. Jim Cunningham will lead the sales department.
“We are very excited to have found an outstanding opportunity to enter the beverage distribution business and particularly about being in the Memphis market,” said David Ingram, president of DBI Distributing Inc. “Crown Distributing is a solid company, which we believe has room for strong growth in this community.”
Crown Distributing Co. distributes beverages for Coors, Pabst, Cadbury Schweppes, Gambrinus, and several other beverage manufacturers.
“Our focus moving forward will be on increasing sales through new account relationships and on enhancing and continually improving service to our existing customers,” said Bob Monroe, general manager. “We will work hard to tailor our services to meet the needs of our diverse clientele.”
A key partnership in the deal is DBI Distributing’s relationship with the Coors Brewing Company, the nation’s third largest brewer. Memphis is home to one of the three Coors plants. Coors has owned the Memphis brewery since 1990 and is a major employer in the community with approximately 600 employees. DBI Distributing and Coors plan to work together to grow the distribution business in Memphis.
“As the Coors Memphis plant manager, I can speak for all Coors employees and say we are extremely enthusiastic about partnering with DBI Distributing, to grow Coors business in our Memphis home market,” said Carolyn Hardy, Coors Memphis plant manager.
Coors will celebrate the partnership with DBI Distributing at its annual kick-off for peak season on April 18 with a day of activities at the brewery. NASCAR driver Sterling Marlin, who is sponsored by Coors Light, will attend the event, which will also include two remote control car-racing contests, a display of Marlin’s racecar, a cookout, photo opportunities, and speeches. There will be two remote control car races — one for employees and one for winners of a WMBZ FM 94.1 radio promotion — with the winners of each taking home two tickets to the upcoming race at Talladega and $500 in cash.
DBI Distributing Inc. was formed by David Ingram to acquire Crown Distributing Co., Inc., a leading beverage distributor in Shelby County, distributing beverages of approximately 20 suppliers to more than 1,400 accounts.
